Every year Bankmed calls for
nominations from principal members to
fill the vacancies created by two retiring
member-elected trustees on the Bankmed
Board of Trustees.
If you were a principal member of the
Scheme at the beginning of the nomination
process, you would have been invited to
nominate a candidate from amongst other
principal members. We wish to thank
those who responded and participated in
this process, and urge you to consider the
importance of the role of trustees.
For information about the election process
and the AGM, please turn to

.
Bankmed is very grateful for the
partnership with its employer group clients
and individual members, and the better
value that this partnership in health and
wellness has created over the years.
We have used previous opportunities,
especially at roadshows, to highlight
the better value that our members are
enjoying – and the focus has generally been
on our comparatively richer benefits for
lower contributions, when compared to an
average open medical scheme, based on
independent actuarial analysis.
What we
have recently started highlighting is
the quality element of our healthcare
offering. Quality is one of the
elements of value. Our assertions
about Bankmed’s better value cannot
ignore this element.
The World Health Organization defines
Quality of Care as “the extent to which
healthcare services provided to individuals
and patient populations improve desired
health outcomes. In order to achieve this,
healthcare must be safe, effective, timely,
efficient, equitable and people-centred.”
One of the definitions assigned to “health
outcome” is the “result of a medical
condition that directly affects the length
or quality of a person’s life”. There is a lot
of literature on this, but I don’t want us to
be stuck on definitions. Instead I want to
give you assurance that we pay attention to
these things, as we should.
We have a habit of subjecting ourselves
to independent analysis to strengthen the
credibility of our assertions. Now, specifically
regarding quality of care, Bankmed also
participates in the industry assessment
facilitated by an entity operating as Health
Quality Assessment (HQA). There is an
understanding amongst participants that our
participation is not aimed at revealing our
individual entities’ strengths or weaknesses,
but elevating the quality of care across the
country.
I therefore don’t intend to break the
informal understanding in this regard, but I
can say the quality of Bankmed’s healthcare
offering is something our members can be
proud of. There are four broad categories
that are assessed by HQA: Screening and
Prevention (Primary Care); Chronic Disease
Management; Hospitalisation; Antenatal and
Perinatal Care. Bankmed is certainly one of the
leaders in the industry in all four categories. It
has turned out to be one of the value attributes
that sets us apart.
Here’s to your good health!
