Don't like exercise? Tips on how to get fit without being bored at the gym

Time to invite gym over?

Not everyone likes the gym, but everyone needs to exercise! So, how do you keep fit and in shape if the thought of going to the gym and having to exercise in front of strangers makes you physically ill? That’s easy; you exercise anywhere but at the gym!

There are those who love the energy, the music and the fact that someone is sweating it out right next to you. While others find the thought of wearing exercise clothing and working up a sweat in public frightening. If you’re one of those who would prefer to skip the treadmill for a chance to go home straight after work then the below is for you.

Dance… even if you have nowhere to do it but in your own living room – Baz Lurhman, Sunscreen Song

Do you love breaking it down to your favourite songs but never seem to get the chance? Well, we say go for it at home! If you’re home alone crank up the tunes and dance like nobody is watching… because nobody is! Dancing is a great form of cardio and it will leave you with a big smile on your face. If you’re really into it you can YouTube dance lessons and give salsa, tango, hip-hop or even ballet a try… all from the comfort of your own living room! And… plié!

Walk this way… walk this way. – Run DMC/Aerosmith

Walking is accessible, free and easy! Call a friend up and arrange to go for a walk around the block before or after work. It’s a brilliant way to get the blood pumping and to stimulate the cardiovascular system. Dog parents? Even better, having your four-legged friends as added motivation to put on those sneakers and get out the house is perfect!

Run this town – Jay Z

So you’ve mastered the walking and even attempted walking uphill a few times… well done! Why not kick it and the heart rate up a notch and incorporate jogging or running in your outdoor meander? Run away from those Monday blues, the mid-week slump and everything in between.

Burn – Deep Purple

Feel the burn! Take to Google and YouTube, ask your exercise-obsessed friends for tips and work out the workout that works for you! You don’t need a lot of equipment (if any) to do a proper strength training session at home. Sit ups, push ups, crunches, lunges, burpies, tricep dips, squats and planking are all exercises where you’ll feel the burn and tone up.

Let me see you do that yoga – Janelle Monae

Namastay home and do yoga… all you need is a mat and a quiet space and you’re set. If you’re a beginner you can YouTube yoga classes and take it slow with your digital guru. Ending your at-home workout with a few yoga poses and stretches is important as it gives the body a chance to recover, and it’s great to relax the mind before continuing with your day.
