Care and cover for heart disease

When you are dealing with a medical condition, you require support in terms of the medical cover for the treatment required as well as emotional and physical support from the care givers around you.

Care for heart disease

The best person to ask for details about medical care for yourself or a loved one with heart disease is the treating Healthcare Professional or cardiologist. They will be able to give you specific advice about what you need to do to care for your health, how to take your medication and any other care needed.

Tips to deal with heart disease if you have it or you are helping to care for someone with heart disease:

1. You do not need to be perfect all the time

It is normal to feel down after being diagnosed with heart disease or hearing that your loved one has heart disease. Talk to someone about your feelings and concerns, and do not be afraid to accept offers of help from family or friends.

2. Ask for support

If you need help or need to take a break, ask for support. Support can be anything from asking someone to cook a meal or help with medical care.

3. Find out what to expect and follow your treatment plan

Speak to your Healthcare Professional to find out what to expect from your specific heart condition. Depending on what caused the heart disease, you may need help for a short time, or you may need long-term care. The most important thing to do is to follow your treatment plan.

Your cover for heart disease

Bankmed also supports you if you have a disease of the heart muscle (cardiomyopathy) or heart failure. Because anyone can develop these types of heart disease and they are Prescribed Minimum Benefit (PMB) conditions, all our Bankmed Plans offer cover for them.

Cardiomyopathy and heart failure are chronic conditions. In general, a chronic condition lasts for at least three months and you have to keep getting treatment for them since they cannot be cured. If your treating Healthcare Professional diagnoses you with one of these conditions, please register for cover on the Chronic Illness Benefit.

We pay for medication for conditions when you register on the Chronic Illness Benefit as an Insured Benefit. This means we pay for your medication, certain tests and visits to Healthcare Professionals without using your day-to-day benefits (such as the funds in your Medical Savings Account if you have one).
