Break out of hibernation with these easy to achieve steps

It’s been a long winter, and you’ve done the odd workout or two, but by now you should be itching to work up a proper sweat without having to layer up and look like the Michelin man and rush back indoors as soon as you’re done. We hear you! That’s why we’ve put together this easy-to-achieve break out of hibernation to-do list.

Spring clean

Whether your wardrobe needs a complete overhaul to make room for your spring clothing, or you feel like you could use a facial, haircut and massage after your hibernation period – get on that spring clean vibe! Get spring ready by tidying and sorting your wardrobe and by giving yourself some pamper time. These post-winter rituals will help you feel good about yourself and get you in the right mindset for getting fit and active.

Start, but start slowly

If you’ve been less active for a while then remember to start slowly so you don’t overexert yourself and cause an injury. Starting small will always feel less overwhelming and will allow you the time needed to ease into a new routine. Try getting up an hour earlier so there’s time to go for a brisk walk followed by stretching or to do 30 minutes of basic yoga. Each week lengthen the exercise and intensity slightly and after about a month or so you’ll have built up your strength and flexibility to move forward with a more strenuous workout routine.

Sun's out, go out!

Getting up earlier and going to bed slightly later means extra exercise time while the sun’s out – yay! When you’re getting back into exercise after the winter months there’s no better way to do it than by soaking up some rays while you’re at it. Vitamin D and exercise are both great ways to improve your mood and bring a smile to your face. Let the sun help melt away the winter blues one stroll at a time.

Partner up – shake off those anti-social cobwebs

Meet up for after-work walks (not wine – although the walk may lead to wine, which is fine). Arranging to meet up with a friend to go for a walk, do a HITT (high intensity interval training) session or yoga class with will make it harder to bail on the new you. Having a friend to get fit with can help turn what many feel is boring into something sociable and fun. Same time tomorrow?

Check your budget – are you rrrreally using the gym?

If not, start your spring/summer workout with these helpful tips and start saving some cash while you do it.
