The smart way to get your GP’s opinion

You have cover for consulting your GP using a video-call application

Seeing your GP face-to-face is important when you start building your doctor–patient relationship, or if you need them to examine you so they can diagnose medical conditions and prescribe treatment. However, you don’t always have to see your GP face-to-face.

Video calls for your health

Applications for smart devices allow us to make video calls. Bankmed calls video calls with your GP for general health advice or to follow up after you’ve already seen them for a condition, a virtual consultation. We pay for virtual consultations from the day-to-day benefits your Plan offers.

Convenient care

Virtual consultations can be more convenient than face-to-face consultations as you don’t need to arrange transport to your GP’s office. If you’re ill and you’re not recovering as fast as you and your GP expected, a virtual consultation is ideal as you can get medical advice at home.

As long as you have benefits available, you and all dependants on your Bankmed membership can each have up to a maximum of three online consultations with GPs. This limit applies to each beneficiary.

How it works

You can only have an online consultation with a GP you have visited in the past six months. Bankmed didn’t decide this, instead the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCA) set this requirement.

You don’t have to download a specific application to use this benefit. You and your GP can use any communication application that you both have installed on your smart devices.

Improve your health with current technology

We all have access to mobile computers in our pockets. While overusing smartphones and having too much screen time can be bad for your health, they are also powerful and useful tools.

Bankmed looks forward to engaging with new technologies with you so you can have convenient tools to improve your health and wellbeing.
